Residents and families recently gathered with their neighbors for our first Beacon Ridge Community Garden Summer Social Pop-Up, an afternoon filled with fellowship and learning, all centered on wellness at the community garden on the Beacon Site campus.

The event reflects our ongoing commitment to the Health & Community Wellness component of our mission, creating opportunities for residents to connect with one another while learning about healthy living, from healthcare to movement and nutrition.

The Community Garden is managed by an extended member of our team, master gardener Shemecka McNeil of SLICE 325, who not only maintains the garden but also shares her expertise to educate our community. Located on our Beacon Site campus between Southeast Raleigh Elementary School and Southeast Raleigh YMCA, the garden produces more than 1,000 pounds of food each year.

At the Garden Social, participants engaged in a variety of activities, from planting their own mini herb gardens and family-friendly games to a raffle giveaway and discussions about the future of the community garden and, possibly, a garden club. Residents shared ideas, explored gardening opportunities – and techniques, and strengthened connections with their neighbors.

A highlight of the pop-up was a live meal-prep demonstration by Shemecka, featuring a fresh salad topped with sautéed chicken breast from Cafe Orleans and raspberry vinaigrette. The demonstration showcased practical ways to incorporate nutritious ingredients inspired by what’s growing in the Community Garden into everyday meals, reinforcing the connection between gardening, healthy eating, and overall wellness.

We hope that bringing residents together not only encourages social connection and healthy living but also fosters community pride. We are growing more than a garden. We are cultivating a healthier community – together!

We appreciate everyone who attended.
