Building Our Community Together: Duke Energy Foundation Invests in the Success of Southeast Raleigh Promise and Students

It’s no secret that when nonprofits, businesses, volunteers, and residents come together, we can create meaningful opportunities for children and families that strengthen the communities we call home.

Southeast Raleigh Promise sends a huge “Thank You” to the Duke Energy Foundation for awarding the organization a $25,000 capacity-building grant and for creating opportunities for local nonprofits to work together to serve and uplift families across our community.

The grant will help strengthen our organizational capacity and our ability to further the Southeast Raleigh promise mission to advance cradle to career education, mixed-income housing, economic vitality, and health and community wellness in Southeast Raleigh.

Beyond the financial support, just before the start of the new school year in August, Southeast Raleigh Promise also joined Duke Energy’s Back-to-School community service initiative alongside fellow nonprofit partners NeighborUp, Women’s Center of Wake County, and Oak City Cares.

Collectively, the nonprofits and volunteers worked around a shared goal to prepare 4,000 care packages for families across the community, helping local children and families start the school year with essential items. In all, more than 200 Duke Energy employees volunteered throughout the day, gathering at
at Residence Inn in downtown Raleigh for morning and afternoon shifts to assemble back-to-school and hygiene care packages for local residents.

The Southeast Raleigh Promise team joined Duke associates to pack and then deliver school supply kits to 1,000 students across four schools along Rock Quarry Road and the surrounding area, including Southeast Raleigh Elementary School, Walnut Creek Elementary School, RISE Charter School, and Preeminent Charter School. Each student received a variety of school supplies tucked inside a drawstring backpack.

Each participating non-profit was awarded a $25,000 grant by Duke Energy Foundation President Loree Elswick and Duke Energy District Manager Derrick Remer. Southeast Raleigh Promise stood alongside Oak City Cares during the morning service event. NeighborUp and the Women’s Center of Wake County also received grant awards during the afternoon service event.
