Preserving Legacy, Building Hope: Southeast Raleigh’s Volunteer Day Delivers Impact
The 4th Annual Southeast Raleigh Home Preservation Volunteer Event on September 24, 2025, was an incredible day of unity, purpose, and impact!
Thanks to over 100 volunteers and community partners, including our Southeast Raleigh Promise team, Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, Wells Fargo, the City of Raleigh, and Partners for Environmental Justice, real change happened in the heart of Southeast Raleigh.
➡️ Improvements were made to the homes of legacy residents
➡️ A new, affordable home moved closer to completion
➡️ The Walnut Creek Wetlands are cleaner – and healthier
➡️ Two city parks are more beautiful and welcoming
➡️ Volunteers learned the powerful history of Southeast Raleigh – and why revitalization is only successful when no one is left out.
First, we were honored by inspiring words from Mayor Janet Cowell, City Councilman Corey Branch, and County Commissioner Tara Waters. We also welcomed N.C. House District 33 Rep. Monika Johnson-Hostler and other special guests.
We also proudly honored three Southeast Raleigh stalwarts – all friends and graduates of our neighbor, Shaw University – with the 2025 Southeast Raleigh Community Service Award for their decades of service and leadership:
➡️ Former District 33 State Representative Rosa Gill
➡️ Civic organizer Virginia Talley
➡️ And surprise recipient, community development advocate Brenda Williamson, a Southeast Raleigh Promise team member who works to empower legacy residents.
Also a surprise: Their awards were presented by Shaw University President Dr. Paulette Dillard! What a powerful reminder of the legacy of excellence rooted in Southeast Raleigh.
Together, we preserved community and built hope toward a future in which we all grow, thrive and prosper.
Thank you to everyone who made this day unforgettable!
