SECU Beacon Site

A 32-acre campus where housing, education, health, and community spaces come together to expand opportunity in Southeast Raleigh.

We are part of a national network — the 16th of more than 25 Purpose Built Communities in the country — and the first in the Triangle to lead a place-based partnership model. We believe in the power of partnerships, collective impact, and working alongside the community to build pathways for residents to pursue community health and wellbeing and economic prosperity.

Opened in 2019, the State Employees Credit Union Beacon Site, located along Rock Quarry Road, is our first expression of the Purpose Built Communities model. The Beacon Site, a 32-acre campus, is home to:

  • Southeast Raleigh YMCA with an outdoor pool
  • Southeast Raleigh Elementary School, a Wake County public school.
  • Beacon Ridge apartments, affordable rental homes developed by DHIC, a local nonprofit,
  • Beacon Point, a two-story commercial retail space and a credit union branch, developed by Self-Help

The Beacon Site is connected to the greenway and features a flourishing community garden that produces more than 1,000 lbs. of fresh fruits and vegetables each year. Each element of the Beacon Site responds to the needs of the community and provides programs, services, and opportunities essential to the success of families and the community at large.

Beyond The Beacon Site

We are partnering with the City of Raleigh and Wake County to advance the first small-scale affordable housing rental development. Situated across 10 city-owned parcels in neighborhoods near downtown Raleigh, the 25 units will feature a mix of duplexes, single-family homes, and ADU rental homes, serving households with incomes between 30% and 80% of the area median income. Construction is underway as of spring 2026.
